About Taos
Taos takes its name from the ancient Indian Pueblo which the Spanish explorers found when they came to the area in the 16th century.
The town of Taos, just south of still-existing Pueblo, is the county seat. Taos is a center for artists and visitors who enjoy the mountain atmosphere and winter skiing. Writer D.H. Lawrence is credited with saying of the county seat, "I think the skyline of Taos is the most beautiful I have ever seen...." Taos was once a meeting place for trappers and traders. It was the home of famous frontier scout Kit Carson, who is commemorated in a state park and museum.
